Alfred Brown was born in 1898 he was the son of Charles a china hawker and Annie Brown (née Smith).
His father was born in 1870 at Nottingham and his mother in 1872 also at Nottingham. They were married in Nottingham in 1893 and had a further son Charles b.1894 at Nottingham.
In 1911 the family was living at 24 Apple Yard, Old Street, Nottingham. Annie and Charles worked in the lace industry.
Alfred Brown enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, He was killed in action, 2nd March 1917, aged 19, whilst in the line near Chilly, France. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
In Memoriam published 2nd March 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post:
'BROWN. – In loving memory of Private Alfred Brown, Sherwoods, killed in action March 2nd, 1917. A loving brother, a brother kind he was to us in heart and mind; he always strove to do his best, God grant him eternal rest. – From brother Charlie, Lily, and Elsie.'
'BROWN. – Killed in action, March 2nd, 1917, Pte. Alfred Brown, Sherwood Foresters, aged 19 years. He little thought his time was near, in this dark world to remain, nor did he think from home he went would he return again. From Aunt Esther, Uncle Sam, cousins Florrie, George, and Albert (in France).'
