Harry Smith was born in 1888 at Nottingham, he married Laura Thompson on 19th May 1917 at Bulwell parish church, Nottingham he was 29 yrs old and a private living at 121 Hempshill Lane, Bulwell, his father was Joseph Smith Laura Thompson 23 yrs is living at 16 Milton Street, Bulwell) he lived at 16 Milton Street, Bulwell, Nottingham.

Laura was born in Bulwell, Nottingham, on 30 August 1893 (O/N/D Basford), the daughter of Henry and Mary Jane Thompson. In 1911 the family was living at 16 Milton Street, Bulwell; Laura (18) was working as an ironer at a laundry.

She and Harry lived with her parents after their marriage.

Commencing 24th June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Laura married secondly Alexander Wilkinson Turner in 1919 (O/N/D Nottingham). In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled Laura and Alexander (b. 1897), a coal miner, were living in Mansfield. Laura died in 1990 (Nov. Mansfield).

Military history

Gunner Harry Smith enlisted at South Camp, Ripon, he served with the 42nd Battery, 36th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, he was killed in action on 2 December 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France (Panel 1).
