He was the son of Thomas Wright and the brother of Phillip, Louisa and Thomas Wright. In 1901 they lived at 1 The Street Great Hockham Norfolk. In 1911 he lived with Sarah 'Wright' at 5 Crewe Terrace Norton Street Radford Nottingham. They may not have been married because Richard's siblings became his legatees and Sarah referred to him as 'my dearest friend' in a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone tribute and to herself simply as 'Sarah' in a locally published obituary (see below).

'Wright. In loving memory of Gunner Richard Wright, killed in action December 15th 1916. A day of remembrance sad to recall. - Sadly missed. - Sarah.'
