William Barker was born in 1878 at Hucknall his father was the late Joseph Barker a shawl maker.
He was the husband of Gertrude Cottam born 4th June 1881 they married 24th September 1916 at St Faiths Church, North Wilford, William was 38 yrs a bachelor and flower pot maker, Gerrude Cottam was 34 yrs and a spinster. they lived at 18 Eckington Terrace Glapton Road Meadows Nottingham.
His widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 11th June 1917.
Gertrude married Walter V Saunders in 1919.
Pte. William Barker, enlisted on 29th February 1916 at Nottingham, giving his address as 77 Commercial Road, Bulwell he was 37 yrs and 261 days old, he was a garden pot make. he served with the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment, he landed in France on 26th September 1916. He died of gunshot wounds to the right leg, left knee and a fractured skull, at No. 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital on 8th December 1916. He is buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No. 1.Grave Reference: III F 9

“BARKER. – In affectionate remembrance of my hear husband, Private W. Barker, who died of wounds, at Boulogne, December 8th, 1916. Also our dear mother, Annie Cottam, who passed away December 19th, 1915. – Husband and family.”
