John Henry Kirkby known as Harry was born in 1887 at Lincoln.
He was the husband of Mabel Ellen Beardsley (born 16th September 1886) they were married in 1909 at Nottingham, They lived at 8 Parkinson Terrace, Archer Street and later at 130 Birkin Avenue (both Hyson Green Nottingham).
In the 1911 census they are living at 8 Parkinson Terrace, Archer Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. John Henry 9shown as Henry) 24 yrs is a cycle polisher, he is living with his wife Mabel 24 yrs.
Private John Henry Kirkby, served with the 1/1st South Notts. Hussars, he landed in Egypt on 26th April 1915 and was killed in action on 7th November 1917. He is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial.
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 28/11/1917:
'Kirkby. Killed in action November 7th Saddler John Henry (Harry) Kirkby, Yeomanry, aged 31 years. - From sorrowing wife (130 Birkin Avenue), mother, father, brothers, sisters.'
In memoriam published 8th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“KIRKBY. – In loving memory of Saddler J. H. (Harry) Kirkby, S.N.H., killed in action November 7th, 1917. He lies far away in the East, where the sound of the guns have ceased, sleeping in a soldier's grave, and counts as one of the brave. – From loving wife, father, mother, sisters, and brothers.”
