Family history

Charles Holland was born in 1889 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a lace maker and Mary Holland née Lee and the brother of Mabel and James Holland they lived at 57 Carlton Road Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1853 at Nottingham, his mother Mary Lee was born in 1855 at Alfreton, they were married on 13th May 1876 at St Matthias Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 57 Carlton Road, Nottingham, William 58 yrs is a lace worker, he is living with his wife Mary 56 ys and their children, Mary 24 yrs a dress maker, Charles 22 yrs a french polisher, Mabel 19 yrs a hosiery hand and James 12 yrs a scholar.

Charles married Kezia Rose (born 27th March 1892) on 12th July 1913 at St Lukes Church, Nottingham, they lived at 4 Pleasant Row, Carlton Hill, Nottingham, they had 2 children, Rose born 1st September 1914 and George William born 8th June 1917.

Commencing 15th April 1918 his wiodw was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Gunner Charles Holland attested on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his address as 282 Carlton Road, he was 27 yrs of age and was a french polisher (wood) he was posted to the reserve.

Mobilised for war on the 29th May 1916 he was posted to the 326th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He landed in France on 12th May 1917, he died of wounds on 26th September 1917 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium

'Holland. Died of wounds September 26th Gnr Charles Holland (signaller) of the RGA aged 28 years the dearly loved son of William and Mary Holland of 57 Carlton Road.'
