Family history

John Thomas Powell was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late William Powell and Mary Lucy Powell née Mann.

His father William was born in 1868 at Nottingham, he died in 1898 aged 30 yrs, his mother Mary Lucy Mann was born in 1868 at Nottingham, they were married on 11th February 1894 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they had a further child William born 1896.

Following the death of his father his mother went on to re mary Harry John Cox in 1908 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Greendale Place Walker Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. his mother Mary Cox (married) 43 yrs and a lace hand is living with her two sons, William Powell 16 yrs a shop assistant and John Thomas Powell 15 yrs a shop assistant.

John Thomas was the husband of Matilda Taylor born 18th January 1895 they were married in 1916 at Nottingham, they lived at 115 Colwick Road, Sneinton, Nottingham.

Commencing 20th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military history

Corporal John Thomas Powell enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 3489 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was serving with the 14th battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 26th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
