George Clayton was born in 1873 at Nottingham.
He married Annie Eliza Blatherwick (born 13th April 1873) at Nottingham in 1894. Seven of their eight children survived infancy - Nellie b.1895, Gershom b.1899, Harold b.1901, Elsie b.1903, George b.1907, Lilly b.1908 and Mary b.1910.
In 1911 they lived at 4 Mullberry Terrace Bulwell Nottingham.
At the time of his death his widow was living at 3 Rutland Terrace, Bunbury Street, Nottingham, his widow was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week commencing 4th April 1917.
George Clayton served with the 7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) [Robin Hood Rifles]. He died at Bagthorpe Isolation Hospital on 19th February 1916 of general paralysis and was buried in Basford Cemetery on 26th February 1916. However, he is not recorded as casualty of war by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

'CLAYTON. – On February 19th, Private George Clayton passed away. Internment Basford Cemetery, Saturday, February 26th, 3.30.'
