Family history

Thomas Ewin Elliott was born in 1879 at Chard, Somerset, he was the son of Edwin a twisthand and Mary Elliott née Merritt of 166 Alfred Street South, Nottingham

His father Edwin was born in 1860 at Chard Somerset, his mother Mary Merritt was born in 1861 at Market Leverton, Wiltshire, she died in 1909 at Nottingham aged 47 yrs they were married in 1879 at Chard, Somerset, they had 10 children, following the death of his mother his father married Mary Needham, in 1910 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 139 Peas Hill Road, Nottingham, Edwin 51 yrs is a twisthand, he is living with hs wife Mary 45 yrs (born 1866 Mirfield Yorkshire) they are living with his children, Fred 19 yrs an engineer, Gerty 18 yrs a pattern girl. Harry 16 yrs a hairdresser, Elsie 15 yrs a machinist and Daisy 10 yrs a scholar,

Thomas Edwin married Hannah Hooton born 1879 Sheffield, they were married on 24th March 1901 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they lived at 10 Pembroke Place Walker Street Sneinton Nottingham and had the follwing children, Elsie Mary b1902, Edwin Lawrence born 1908, Claude Henry born 1910 and Lilian born 1914.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Pipe Street, Nottingham, Thomas Edwin 32 yrs is a coal caret, he is living with his wife Hannah 32 yrs and their children, Elsie Mary 8 yrs, Edwin Lawrence 3 yrs andClaude Henry 11 months old.

Commence 30th April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week for herself and her four children.

Military history

Private Thomas EDwin Elliott enlisted on 28th August 1914 at Nottingham giving his age as 29 yrs and 259 days,(born in 1879 he was actually 35 yrs ) he was a town carter, posted to the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regimet he landed in France on 15th August 1916, he was killed in action on 8th October 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
