Family history

Colin Hugh Godson was born in 1878 at Basford, he was the son of the late Charles Henry Godson a soldier and Charlotte Godson néé Lewis.

His father was born in 1832 at Coventry, he died prior to his sons marriage in 1905 his mother Charlotte Lewis was born in 1847 at Haverford West, Wales they were married in 1870 at Radford, Nottingham. .

In 1881 they lived in a yard off Chelsea Street North Gate Basford Nottingham.

Colin married Myra Hannah Payne (born 6th January 1879) they were married on 4th July 1905 at St Judes Church, Egham, Surrey, they had 2 sons Colin Henry born 30th June 1906 and Wilfred Phillip born 9th May 1913, they lived at 7 Harneat Road, Englefield Green, Surrey.

In the 1911 census Colin Godson is serving with the Royal Fusiliers at the Finsbury Barracks in London he is 33 yrs and a Sergeant.

Commencing 7th May 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 27 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Sergeant Colin Hugh Godson enlisted at East Ham whilst residing at Pimlico, London, he served with the 32nd battalion Royal Fusiliers, hsi served in South Africa and had served for 18 yrs when he was killed in action on 4th October 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 4/10/1917:

'Godson. Killed in action somewhere in France Colin Hugh Godson Co Sergt Major Royal Fusiliers of Nottingham. Age shall not weary nor the years condemn.'

His son Corporal Wilfred Phillip Godson served and died during the second world war, he served with service number 5339020 with the 4th battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 20th Spetember 1944 aged 31 yrs during Operation 'Market Garden'
