Ernest Sims was born in 1885 at Nottingham, he was the son of Henry Sims a frame work knitter and later an elastic bandage maker and Eliza Sims née Glazebrook.
His father Henry was born in 1851 at Derby, his mother Eliza Glazebrook was born in 1849 at Nottingham, they were married on 19th May 1872 at St Marys Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 52 Kingston Street, Nottingham, Henry 60 yrs is an elastic bandage maker, he is living with his wife Eliza 62 yrs and his married son Ernest 26 yrs a general labourer and his daughter in law Caroline 27 yrs a book folder and his grandchildren Eveline 4 yrs and Lilian 1 month old.
Ernest was the husband of Caroline Amy Crawley (born 7th October 1884 at London) they were married in 1904 at St Pancras, London. They had 4 children, Henry born 6th December 1904, Eveline Alice born 25th April 1906, Lilian born and died in 1911 and Ernest born 2nd November 1912.
The family lived at 65 Brandeth Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham.
Commencing 18th February 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week.
Private Ernest Sims enlisted at Derby he served with the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards, he was killed in action on 31st July 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 23/8/1917:
'Sims. Killed in action July 31st Private Ernest Sims Grenadier Guards 65 Brand Street Meadow Lane. - From his sorrowing wife and children, dad and mother.'
