John Whiteman was born in 1881 at Nottingham, he was the son of Wesley Whiteman a carter and Mary Whiteman née Evans of 25 Derwent Street, Nottingham.
His father Wesley was born in 1853 at St Germans, Norfolk his mother Mary Evans was born in 1855 at Owthorpe, Nottinghamshire they were married C1875, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 25 Derwent Street, Nottingham, Wesley 57 yrs a carting contractor, he is living with his wife Mary 57 yrs and their children, Laura Kate 24 yrs no occupation listed, Wesley 24 yrs a fancy goods stocktaker and Edith Eliza 16 yrs an errand girl.
He was the husband of Ettie Poole (born 26th September 1877 Nottingham) they were married in 1907 at Nottingham, they lived at 8 Fox Terrace, Middle Furlong Road, Meadows, Nottingham, they had a daughter Gladys Whiteman born 20th June 1907
In the 1911 census they lived at 8 Fox Terrace Middle Furlong Road Meadows Nottingham, John Whiteman 30 yrs is a carter he is living with his wife Etty 34 yrs and their daughter Gladys 3 yrs of age.
Commencing 14th March 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.
Sergeant John Whiteman enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 29th March 1918, he is buried at St Sever Cemetery extension, Rouen.
Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 29/3/1919:
'Whiteman. In loving memory of my dear husband Sgt J Whiteman died of wounds March 29th 1918. Cherished memories. - Wife and daughter.'
