George William Barsby was born in 1889 at Nottingham, he was the son of Thomas a colliery banksman and the late Harriett Barsby née Williamson Jayes of Thoroton Terrace, Thoroton Street, Nottingham.
His father Thomas was born in 1858 at Rothley, Leicestershire, his mother Harriet William Jayes was born in 1852 at Whitchurch, Leicestershire, she died in 1903 aged 51 yrs, they were married in 1878 at Basford, Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Thoroton Terrace, Thoroton Street, Nottingham, Head of the household is Lucy Barsby 49 yrs of age a cook and a widow she is living with Thomas Barsby 50 yrsa colliery banksman he is a lodger, also living at the address are George Barsby 22 yrs a factory hand, described as a lodger, Alfred Barsby 16 yrs a shop assistant and a lodger .
George William married Edith Butler (born 22nd January 1895) they were married in 1914 at Nottingham, they had a daughter Violet Elizabeth born 17th July 1915 they lived at 2 Russell Place, Hyson Green,Nottingham.
Commencing 12th February 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.
His widow remarried on 22nd March 1917 to Private G H Brown of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps.
Private George William Barsby enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 19th July 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial.

'Barsby. In loving memory of my dear husband Pte G Barsby killed in action July 19th 1916. Ever in our thoughts. Wife Edith, baby, sister Harriet and brother in law Arthur.'
