Family history

Frederick Charles Whitby was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Francis Thomas and Kate Whitby née Walters and the brother of Annie, Mabel, May, Florrie and Ivy Whitby.

His father Francis Thomas was born in 1869 at Nottingham, his mother Kate Walters was born in 1871 at Nottingham, they were married on 18th July 1893 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 10 Regent Hill Sneinton Nottingham Francis Thomas 42 yrs is a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Kate 40 yrs and their 6 children, including Frederick Charles 16 yrs a mechanic learner.

Military history

Private Frederick Charles Whitby enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 12th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 27th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
