Family history

Frederick William Cave was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of Thomas a tailor and Hannah Mary Cave née Rumph of 20 Burnham Street, Sherwood.

His father Thomas was born in 1856 at Surfleet, Lincolnshire, his mother Hannah Mary Rumph was born in 1858 at Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire, they were married on 24th December 1882 at St Peters Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Burnham Street, Sherwood, Thomas 55 yrs is a tailor he is living with his wife Hannah Mary 53 yrs and ther children Edith Anne 26 yrs a house keeper, Flossie 24 yrs a tailoress, Drusilla 23 yrs a lace jennier, Ethel May 20 yrs a blouse machinist, Frederick William 17 yrs an electrician, Charles Henry 15 yrs a scholar and Ernest Edward 11 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Lance Corporal Frederick William Cave enlisted at Birmingham whilst residing at Birmingham, he served with the 10th battalion Rifle Brigade,landing n France on 1st October 1915. He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 having no known grave hs name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

'Cave. Killed in action September 13th (sic) 1916 Cpl Frederick Cave Rifle Brigade Burnham Street Sherwood. Fondly remembered by Winnie and Marie.'
