Family history

Albert Rockley was born in 1891 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late John Rockley a stationary engine driver and the late Mary Jane Rockley née Blood of 27 Springfield Street, Basford.

His father John was born in 1842 at Bulcote, Nottinghamshire, he died in 1909 aaged 67 yrs, his mother Mary Jane Blood was born in 1851 at Ruddington, she died in 1909 aged 58 yrs, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children.

Albert was the husband of Maggie Hockley (born 5th November 1891) they were married in 1916 at Nottingham, they lived at 41 Ewart Road, Nottingham.

Commencing 4th January 1918 his widow was awared a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

His widow married Cecil Cowling in 1920 and they lived at 11 Bowness Avenue Stockhill Basford Nottingham.

Military history

Private Albert Rockley enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 68852 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 14th April 1918 whilst serving with the 9th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

'Rockley. In loving remembrance of my dear husband private Albert Rockley who was killed in action 14th April 1918.The fairest of flowers are the first to fall. One of the kindest and best of all has found a hero's grave. Loving wife.'

'Rockley. In memory of our dear brother Pte Albert Rockley, killed in action April 14th 1918. Never will his memory fade. - Loving sister Jennie, bother George also Polly (Draycott).'
