Family history

Charles Henry Briggs was born in 1895 the son of Henry a brick layer’s labourer and Rosina Briggs (née Ingers).

His father was born in 1871 at Nottingham and his mother in 1874 also at Nottingham. they were married in 1894 at Nottingham, they had eight children, six surviving infancy - Charles b.1895, Benjamin b.1899, Henry b.1902, John b.1904, Thomas b.1906 and Mark b.1910. In 1910 they lived at 44 Milk Square Glasshouse Street,

in the 1911 census the family lived at 4 Alvey’s Yard Fisher Gate, Henry Briggs 40 yrs is a bricklayers labourer, he is living with his wife Rosina 37 yrs and their 6 children including Charles 17 yrs a builders carter.

At the time of Charles’s death the family lived at 123 Peas Hill Road St Ann’s Nottingham.

Military history

Charles Briggs served under his mother’s maiden name Ingers (probably because his parents had separated). He enlisted in Nottingham and landed in France on 14th July 1915. he served with the 8th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 19th December 1915 and is buried at Menin Road South Military Cemetery Ypres Grave Reference: III E 22

Extra information

His brother Benjamin Briggs enlisted 23rd August 1916 at Nottingham giving his age as 17 years and 359 Days. He was posted to the reserves the following day and mobilised 20th March 1917 when he was posted to the 2/1st Battalion Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. He was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters 22nd January 1917. He went missing in action on 3rd October 1918 and was buried at Ramicourt British Cemetery Aisne Grave Reference: A 7
