Family history

William Smith was born in 1882 at Clarborough, he was the son of William a town labourer and Margaret Smith née Benn of 7 Beck Row, Spital Hill, Retford.

His father William was born in 1852 at Retford, his mother Margaret Benn was born in 1853 at Clarborough they were married on 15th September 1878 at St Saviours Church, East Retford. they went on to have 7 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Beck Row, Spital Hill, Retford, William 59 yrs is a town labourer, he is living with his wife Margaret 55 yrs and 3 of their children, John William 33 yrs a brick layers labourer, Alfred 22 yrs a labourer and Leonard 16 yrs an apprentice.

His pension record cards shows both his parents William and Margaret Smith as dependents, they are living at 5 Wellington Street, Spittal Hill, Retord, it also states his unoffical wife to be Sarah Walker of Bakehouse Yard, Spittal Hill, Retord, as a dependent. she was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week from 12th June 1917.

Military history

Private Harry Smith enlisted at Retford, he served with the 6th battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th August 1915 at Gallipoli, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli
