Family history

Fred Kitchen was born at Misterton on 4th February 1880 he was baptised on 6th February 1881 at All Saints at Misterton, he was the son of Henry a brick maker and Sarah Kitching (nee Barthorpe).

He had two elder brothers George born 1872 and William born 1875.

Military history

He arrived in Gallipoli on 28 August 1915 and was probably one of the 10% kept back in Mudros during the battalion's first battles. He was killed in action on 14 November 1915 and is buried in Azmak Cemetery, grave I.D.4. From Monday 8th until 15th November, the battalion was in the front line in the Lone Tree Gully sector around Leather Lane, near Oxford Circus and Oxford Street, just behind Jephson's Post.

This man is listed on both Misterton memorials as F Kitching however his correct name of Fred Kitchen is on the local newspaper article and on his commonwealth wargraves headstone.
