Family history

Ernest was the son of William and Clara Marshall (née Standerline).

His father William was born in 1848 at Market Rasen and his mother Clara in 1852 also in Lincolnshire. They were married about 1871 and had ten children, including Ernest who was born in 1891: William b. 1872 Hibalstow, Lincolnshire, Louise b. 1875 and Ada b. 1877 who were born in Hibalstow and their siblings who were born in Nottingham, Herbert b. 1883, Emily b. 1885, Albert b. 1887 Clara b. 1889, Rachel b. 1894 and Arthur b. 1898.

In 1901 the family was living at 15 Commerce Place, Barker Gate, Nottingham; his father was a bricklayer.

His mother Clara died in 1907 in Nottingham aged 57.

In 1911 the family lived at 12 Pierrepoint Street Nottingham. Most of the children had left home and Albert and Ernest were listed by their father as soldiers on the 1911 Census.

At the time of his sons’ deaths (1916, 1917) William was living at 7 Carter Place, Carter Gate, Nottingham.

Military history

Ernest Marshall enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters.

He was reported missing in action in October 1916 but his death on 15 October was not confirmed until September 1917. Ernest has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France (Pier & Face 10C, 10D & 11A).

Extra information

Ernest's brother, Albert, served with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (10398 Private) and was killed in action on 31 July 1917. (See record on this Roll of Honour)

Their brother, William Marshall, attested in Nottingham on 10 July 1915 and was posted initially to the Lincolnshire Regiment but later served with the Labour Corps. He saw service with the British Expeditionary Force from 3 September 1917 and was demobilised on 27 March 1919.

Nottingham Evening Post, 'Roll of Honour', 12 September 1917: 'Marshall. Missing, October 15th, 1916, now reported killed, Private Ernest Marshall, Sherwood Foresters, 36, Sheridan-street. I often sit and think of you, and think of how you died, to think you were too far away to say a last good-bye. – From his loving sister and brother (in France).’
