John Joseph Huriam White was born in 1899 at Mansfield, he was the son of David a railway goods guard and Hannah White née Smith of 62 Kings Meadow Road, Nottingham.
His father David was born in 1868 in Southwell and Hannah Smith in 1869 at Gotham they were married in the Loughborough Registration District in 1869, they had seven children. John Joseph’s five siblings to survive infancy were Frances Eliza Elizabeth b.1892 in Derby, Annie Mary Hannah b.1898 Mansfield, May Elsie Maria b.1902 Mansfield, Edith Lucy Jane b.1904 Mansfield, and Walter Ernest William b.1906 in Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 62 King’s Meadow Road Meadows Nottingham, David 43 yrs is a railway good guard, he is living with his wife Hannah 42 yrs and their children, Francis Eliza Elizabeth 19 yrs a lace dresser, Annie Mary Hannah 13 yrs a scholar, John Joseph Huriam 11 yrs a scholar, Mary Elsie Maria 9 yrs a scholar, Edith Lucy Jane 7 yrs a scholar and Walter Ernest William 5 yrs of age.
Private John White enlisted at Nottingham serving initially (107357) in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) before being posted to the 1/24th Queens (Royal West Surrey Regiment,) he was killed in action on 14th October 1918 and is buried at Aubers Ridge British Cemetery, Aubers, France. Grave Reference: VI F 12
Death notice published 29th March 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
‘WHITE.-- Killed in action Oct. 14th, Pte. J. J. H. White of 1/24 London Regt., the dearly beloved son of David and Hannah White, 62 King's Meadow-road. With aching hearts we shook his hands, tears glistened in our eyes, we wished him luck but never thought it was his last good-bye. – From his broken-hearted mother, father, sisters and brother Frances and Ted.’
