Family history

William Henry Smith was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of Thomas a frame work knitter and Annie Smith née Hatfield and the brother of Grace, Evelyn, Oliver and Ernest Smith.

His father Thomas was born in 1860 at Nottingham, his mother Annie Hatfild was born in 1858 at Sneinton, Nottingham, they were married on 11th June 1877 at St Mathias Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 5 children.

In 1911 they lived at 130 Pym Street St Ann's Nottingham, Thomas 51 yrs a frame work knitter, he is living with his wife Annie 50 yrs and their children, Grace 20 yrs a hosiery mender, William Henry 18 yrs a cabinet maker, Evelyn 13 yrs a scholar, Oliver 9 yrs and Ernest 7 yrs of age.

The family later lived at 16 Eyres Avenue, Windmill Lane, Nottingham.

Military history

Pte. William Henry Smith, 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, died as a prisoner of war on 27th September 1917. He is buried in Hamburg Cemetery.

His capture was reported in the 'Nottingham Daily Express' on 21st July 1917 when a number of men from “C” Company, 1st Battalion were confirmed as prisoners of war, all of whom were captured on 4th April 1917

In memoriam published 27th September 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-

SMITH. – In memory of our dear son, died prisoner of war, September 27th, 1917. Shattered hopes. – Sorrowing family, 16, Eyres-avenue, and sister Mabel.”
