Bernard Allan Johnson was born in 1892 at Carlton, Nottingham he was the son of John Johnson an insurance & Hannah Johnson née Allen of 57 Deabill Street, Netherfield.
In 1901 the family were living at No 1 Bennett Street in Long Eaton. John was an Insurance Agent.
His father John was born in 1867 and his mother Hannah Allen was born in 1868 both were born in Carlton, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 3 children.
By 1911 the family living at 57 Debbill Street, Netherfield, consisted of 2 sons and a daughter. Bernard was working as a Grocers shop assistant, perhaps helping his Mother who was a Grocery shopkeeper. His father John was not at home at the time of the census.
Bernard Allan Johnson enlisted on 17th August 1915 at Nottingham and was posted to the 18th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. However on 19th June 1916 he was transferred to the 2/22th battalion London Regiment. He landed in France on 29th June 1916 but by 11th July 1916 he was returned to England. He was discharged as no longer physically fit for service on 6th August 1916 and died at home on 7th September 1916 of tubercular meningitis and is buried in Carlton, Cemetery. .
He is not recorded as a casualty of war by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
In memoriam published 7th September 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“JOHNSON. – In loving memory of Private Bernard Allan Johnson, Deabill-street, Netherfield, died September 7th, 1916. He will never be forgotten, never will his memory fade; loving thoughts will always wander to the place where he is laid. – Mother, brother, and sister.”
