Family history

William Ayres was born in in 1879 at Lea Brookes, Derbyshire,

He married Kate Smith (born 29th September 1879 at Nottingham) at Nottingham Register Office on 29th November 1900. He was the father of Gertrude Annie, William, Horace Edward, Arthur and Jack Ayres.

In 1901 they lived on Erye Yard Sneinton Road and later at 5 Claremont Villas Rookwood Street Hungerhill Road St Ann's (both Nottingham). Kate later lived at 15 Coppice Road (now Ransom Road) St Ann's Well Road Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 12 Bullance Road, Nottingham he is shown as Willie Ayres 32 yrs a cricket bat sandpaperer, he is living with his wife Kate 32 yrs and their children,Sidney13 yrs,Gerty 10 yrs, Willie 7 yrs, Horace 4 yrs Arthur 2 yrs and Jack 7 months.

Commencing 11th December 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 27 shillings a week.

Military history

Rifleman WilliamAyres was 5 ' 4" tall and weighed 139 lbs when he enlisted on 17th November 1914. at Nottingham, giving his address as 5 Claremont Villas, Brookwood Road, Nottingham, he was a painter.. Posted to the 2nd battalion King's Ryal Rifle Corps, he embarked from Southampton on 14th Decemebr 1915 landing the same day at Le Harve.

He died on 7th June 1916 from a grenade wound received to his left leg on 16th April 1916 and is buried at St Severs Cemetery, Rouen.
