Sidney Bown was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Ernest Own Bown a manager of a boot repair shop and the late Susan Bown née Susan Hardy he was the the brother of Frank and Ernest Bown.

His father Ernest Owen Bown was born in 1873 at Leicester he died in 1902 aged 29 yrs his mother Susan Hardy was born in 1872 at Kirby Muxloe, Leicester, they were married in 1895 at Leicester they had 3 sons.

In the 1901 cenus the family are living at 185 Mansfield Road Nottingham.

In the 1911 census Sidney is living at 24 Derwen Terrace, Sherwood, he is shown as bieng 14 yrs of age, he is living with his aunt Susan Cutts 46 yrs married, he is also living with aunt Rachel 44 yrs and his brothers Frank 2 yrs and Ernet 4 yrs of age.

Sidney's pension record card shows his foster parent to be Rachel Elizabeth Bown 83 Deabill Street, Nottingham and later 48 Godfrey Street, Netherfield as his dependent.

Military history

Private Sidney Bown enlisted at Nottingham, he served initially with service number 22145 in the Grenadier Guards, he was serving with the 1st battalio Welsh Guards he died of wounds on 6th July 1916 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery
