Ernest Slack was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 23rd October 1895 at St Marks Church, Nottingham, his mother was Susan Slack of the Union Workshouse.
In the 1901 census he was 5 yrs of age he is boarding with Henry Bailey a boatman and Jane Bailey at 21 Mount Court Mount Street, Street Nottingham.
In the 1911 census his mother Susan Slack is living at Thulston near Derby she is shown as being 51 yrs and single, no occupation listed she is living with Joseph Spencer 68 years , a widower a gardeners labourer.
CWGC refers to him as 'the son of late Mrs Jane Bailey'.
Private Ernest Slack enlisted on 9th November 1914 at Notingham giving his age as 19 yrs and 27 days, he was a town labourer, his next of kin was his mother Susan Slack of Hentry House, Thulston, Borrowash, Derbyshire. he was on posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was discharged on 2nd January 1915, as not likely to become an efficient soldier.
He must have later rejoined or was called up for service as he served with the service number 4994 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) before transferring to the 46th battalion Machine Gun Corps, he was killed in action on 24th September 1918, he is buried at
