Family history

George Phillips was born in 1865 at Alton, Staffordshire he was the son of the late John a coal miner and Ann Phillips née Rushton of 52 New Street, East Kikby,

His father John was born in 1838 at Wardaw, Staffordshire, he died in 1911 aged 73 yrs, his mother Ann Rushton was born in 1840 at Cotton, Staffordshire, they were married on 2nd July 1860 in Staffordshire, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the1911 census his parents are living at 52 New Street, East Kirkby John 73 yrs a retired coal miner is living with his wife Ann 70 yrs.

George Phillips married Harriett Owen (born 27th December 1866) in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 6 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving children were Lucy b1890, Lois b1894 and Alice b1896 all were born in East Kirkby

In 1911 the family are living at 29 Gladstone Street, East Kirkby. George 46 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his wife Harriett 43 yrs and their children, Lucy 21 yrs a millhand tin box painter, Lois 17 yrs a tin box solderer and Alice 15 yrs a tin box maker.

Commencing 11th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 27 shillings and 11 pence a week, she was living at 25 Prospect Street, East Kirkby.

Military history

Sapper George Phillips enlisted at Blackwell, Worcestershire whilst residing at East Kirkby, he died of wounds on 16th November 1915 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium,
