Family history

James William Halford was born at Newthorpe Nottinghamshire in 1888, he was the son of the late Edward Halford a fish hawker and Mary Ann Halford née Smith of Nottingham.

His father Edward was born on 11th August 1859 at 7 Barn Street, Birningham he died in 1913 aged 54 at the Nottingham Workshouse infrmary he was aged 54 yrs, his mother Mary Ann Smith was born in 1864 at Bordsley, Warwickshire. they were married on 30th October 1881 at St Pauls Church, Burton on Trent. they went on to have 9 children, sadly threee were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his father is a visitor living at Moorgate Stret, New Radford, he is shown as being 52 yrs and a fish dealer he is visitor, visitng his brother in law Frederick Wright 36 yrs a general dealer and his family.

In the same 1911 census we find his mother and siblings living at 8 Lindsey Street, Nottingham Mary Ann Halford 43 yrs a charwoman she is living with her children, Frederick 15 yrs a bleach worker, Ernest 10 yrs and Wilford 9 years of age.

James William married Elizabeth Clay (born 20th June 1888 Nottingham) at Nottingham in 1907 they had the following children, Lillian May born 23rd April 1908 William James born 30th March 1910 , Gladys Edith born 2nd August 1912 and Winifred May born 3rd June 1914. .1910.

In 1911 the family was living at 4 Haughton Place Holland Street Hyson Green Nottingham William 23 yrs is a lace hand, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 22 yrs a spinner and their children Lilly May 3 yrs and William James 1 year old.

At the time of James’s death the family were living at 3 Belvedere Place Saville Street Hyson Green.

Commencing 4th September 1916, his widow was awarded a weekly pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence.

Military history

Rifleman James William Halford, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 10th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France on 22nd July 1915 and was killed in action on 21st February 1916. He is buried in La Belle Alliance Cemetery Belgium Grave Reference B 1.
