Family History

Norman Albert Taylor was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a wood turner and Polly of 58 Rupert Street, Nottingha. His father William was born in 1852 at Nottingham , his mother Polly was born in 1856 also at Nottingham, they were married C1878 and went on to have 13 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood, In the 1911 census the family are living at 161 Wilford Road, Nottingham, William 59 yrs is a wood turner he is living with his wife Polly 55 yrs and their children, William 20 yrs a moulder, Claude 17 yrs a moulder and Norman 15 yrs a moulder. Norman Albert married Annie Herman (born 28th April 1896 on 13th December 1914 a the Weslyan Chapel, Halifax Place, Nottingham, they lived at 2 Ethel Grove, King’s Meadow Road, Nottingham, they had a son Norman Albert born 22nd May 1915. Commencing 28th August 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week. His widow remarried on 17th November 1917 to Lot Pinkett a munitions worker.

Military History

Private Norman Albert Taylor enlisted on 31st August 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 19 yrs and 235 days, he was a circular sawyer. He served with the 1s battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, landing in France on 27th January 1915 he suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died on 13th February 1916 he is buried at Erquinghem-Lys Churchyard Extension, France. Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post read :- “TAYLOR. – In affectionate remembrance of my dear husband, Norman, died from wounds at Capelle, Armentiere, February 13th, 1916. Christ will link the broken chain closer when we meet again. - Ever remembered by his loving wife and baby, Norman.“TAYLOR. – In fondest remembrance of our dear brother, Norman, died from wounds at Capelle, Armentieres, February 13th, 1916. His memory is as dear to-day as in the hour he passed away. - Sister, brother, Ada, and Will (in France).“TAYLOR. – In ever-loving memory of my dear son, also of our dear brother, Private Norman Taylor, Sherwood Foresters, died of wounds in France, February 13th, 1916.
