George Beck was born in 1878 at Radford, he was the son of the late Robert Beck a blacksmiths labourer and the late Jane Beck née Aucott.
His father Robert Beck was born in 1840 in Leicester he died in 1891 aged 51 yrs, his mother Jane Aucott was born in 1841 also at Leicester she died in 1904 aged 53 yrs, they were married in 1859 their marriage was recorded in the Leicester Registration district, they went on to have 10 children
George married Harriett Ricketts (born 9th July 1878) they were married on 9th April 1898 at Christ Church, Nottingham, they lived at 13 Shirley Terrace, Kirkstead Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. They had the following children, Sarah Jane (born 22/5/1898) and Hilda May (born 20/12/1899) Beck.
In 1911 they lived at 12 Ronald Street and then 13 Bloomsgrove Street (both Radford) and later at 13 Shirley Terrace Kirkstead Street Hyson Green (all Nottingham).
Commencing 13th August 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
12th Bn Rifle Brigade. Rifleman George Beck enlisted on 8th September 1914, at Nottingham, standing 5' 3" tall and weighing 117lbs giving his age as 33 yrs and 16 days, he was a wood machinist.
He served at home until 21st July 1915 when he was posted to France.
He died at 9.15am on 2nd February 1917 at 21st Casualty Clearing Station , France from bronchiti and he was buried in La Neuville Communal Cemetery Corbie Grave Reference: B.58.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 3 April 1917: Private G Beck, Rifle Brigade, 13 Shirley Terrace, Kirke White Street (sic), Nottingham, died of bronchitis aged 39.
This man has been placed on the Radford Virtual Memorial because he was born in Radford and had lived there for most of his life. The Hyson Green address cited by CWGC and the NEP obituary is described as 'new' in Beck's Army Service Record and he may never have lived there.
