Frederick Whate (junior) was born in 1876 at Nottingham he was the son of the late Frederick Whate (senior) a painter and Mary Whate née Allen of 26 Wilfred Crescent East, Meadows, Nottingham.
His father Frederick (senior) was born in 1836 at Nottingham, he died in 1905 aged 69 yrs, his mother Mary Allen was born in 1838 at Nottingham, they were married on 17th July 1870 at St Mary’s Church, Nottingham, they had 4 children.
Frederick (junior) married Elizabeth Ann Guyler (born 11th September 1876 in Newthorpe) on 3rd April 1904 at St Wilfrids Church, Wilford, Nottingham, they had two children both born at Nottingham - William Frederick Whate born 2nd July 1905 and Mary Lucy Whate born 24th October 1910, they were living at 17 Pegg Terrace, Goodhead Street, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 118 Kings Meadow Road, Meadows, Nottingham. Frederick 34 yrs is a railway engine stoker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 34 years and their children, William Fred 5 yrs and Mary Lucy 5 months old.
Commencing 14th August 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.
His widow re married on 23rd June 1917 to John Griffiths.
Gunner Frederick Whate enlisted at Nottingham , he served with 'D' Bty 105th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, landing in France on 26th August 1915 he died of wounds on 26th January 1916 and is buried at Bailleul Comunal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.
