Family history

Robert known as ‘Bob’ was born in 1885 the son of the late Thomas an iron moulder and Emma Hallam née Oldham who lived in Lenton, Nottingham.

His father was born in 1849 in Loughborough he died in 1894 at Nottingham, he was aged 46 yrs and his mother Emma Oldham was born in 1851 in Nottingham they were married in 1872 at Nottingham. They had 6 children all born at Nottingham - Agnes b.1887, Elizabeth b.1880, Harry b.1882, Robert b.1885, Sarah b.1886 and Charles born 1891.

In 1891 the family was living at 15 Page Street Lenton Nottingham. Thomas Hallam died aged 43 in 1893. In 1901 his mother Emma lived at 3 Page Street Lenton with Harry, Robert and Sarah. Emma died aged 54 in 1906.

In 1906 at Nottingham, Robert married Gertrude Smith (born 15th January 1882 Derbyshire ) Gertrude brought a child to the marriage Frank Alfred Smith born 24th April 1904 and they had the following children, Eunice born 7th September 1909, Clara born 25t July 1911 William Robert born 16th December 1913 and Gertrude born 30th March 1915.

In 1911 they lived at 51 Tyne Street Lenton. Robert 26 yrs an iron moulder, he is living with his wife Gertude 29 yrs and their daughter Eunice 1 year of age.

Commencing 1st July 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Robert Hallam enlisted in Nottingham giving his residence as Lenton. He first served with the army number 3625 in 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment), later transferring to the Royal Engineers. He was killed in action at Cambrai and is buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery Grave Reference: III A 25

“HALLAM. – In remembrance of our dear brother Bob, killed in Cambrai November 29th, 1917 (Royal Engineers). Unknown to the world he stands by our side, and whispers “Dear sisters and brothers, death cannot divide.” – Lizzie, Harry (in Malta), Charlie (France), Bill (wounded)
