Family history

Walter Woodruffe was born in 1889 at Long Eaton, he was the son of the late Thomas Hardy and Sarah Woodruffe née Roe of 14 Clay Row, Long Eaton.

His father Thomas was born in 1852 at Seagrave, Leicestershire, he died in 1902 aged 50 yrs his mother Sarah Roe was born in 1852 at Kegworth, they were married on 3rd December 1871 at Long Eaton, they went on to have 12 children, sadly eight were to die in infancy or earley childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 14 New Eaton Lane Long Eaton Derbyshire. Sarah 59 yrs is a widow no occupation listed she is living with her children, Walter 22 yrs a lace maker, Percy 16 yrs a fitters apprentice, and Maria Chapman 4 yrs a grandaugher also at the address are 3 lodgers.

Walter married Ruth Gollin born 1891 at Stapleford, they were married on 5th April 1913 at Shardlow, they had 2 children, Hardy Jospeh Woodruffe born 1913 and Francis Walter Woodruffe born 1916.

His probate was proven on 3rd May 1919 in London, it shows him as Walter Woodruffe of 1 Isaacs Lane, Staplford , Nottinghamshire, he died on 1st July 1918 at the National Shell Filing Factory at Chillwell, his effects of 80 pounds and 16 shillings and 1 pence were left to Ruth Woodruffe, widow.

Military history

He was working at the National Filling Factory at Chilwell when he was killed in the explosion at the factory on 1st July 1918.
