George Belshaw was born in 1885 at Carrington, he was the son of Thomas a pavier and Sarah Belshaw née Atkin of 9, Silverwood Place, Nottingham his father Thomas was born in 1863 at Nottingham, his mother Sarah Atkin was born in 1862 at Nottingham she died in 1903 aged 41 yrs., they were married on 20th May 1883 at St Matthias Church, Nottingham they went on to have 5 children.
George married Evelyn Blakiston Dean (born 18th December 1885 at Bishop Auckland, Durham, ) they were married on 6th May 1905 at Nottingham, they had the following children, Thomas born 2nd November 1905, Frank born 19th July 1907, Edmund born 30th May 1910 and Evelyn Belshaw born 18th May 1912.
In 1911 they lived at 6 Kebir Terrace Simkins Street St Ann's and at 17 Kemp's Cottages Lowdham Street St Ann's at the time of George's enlistment.
Commencing 26th June 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week. Evelyn married John Oldham at Nottingham in 1917.
Belshaw had previously served with 4th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) and purchased his discharge. He was recalled from the Reserve and attested 26/8/1914 standing 5' 6" tall and weighing 155lbs. He was awarded ten days detention for absence in October 1914 and was posted 12/8/1915.
26/6/1916 Belshaw's widow was awarded a weekly pension of 22/6d for herself and four children.
Belshaw had several tattoos - Girls with a flag, Horses head, Butterfly and I Love E D on his chest. (ASR)
