John Willaim Attenborough was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter a brick layer and the late Mary Ann Attenborough née Smith and the the brother of Eliza Ann Attenborough.
His father Walter was born in 1862 at Nottingham, his mother Mary Ann Smith was born in 1858 at Lambeth, London, she died in 1912 aged 54 yrs they had a further child Eliza Ann born 1888.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 78 Dame Agnes Street St Ann's Nottingham Walter 49 yrs is a bricklayer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann53 yrs and their children, Eliza Ann 23 yrs a hosiery cutter and John 16 yrs a machine comber,
Private John William Attenborough enlisted at Nottingham and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, whilst holding the line near Sorrell Wood/Longeuval, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
