Sydney Payne was born in 1897 the son of Thomas a machinist and Mary Payne née Leek of 30 Alberta Terrace Sherwood Rise Nottingham.
Thomas was born in 1871 in Nottingham, his mother in 1873 in Ireland. They were married in 1894 in Nottingham and had four children, three surviving infancy - Sydney b.1897, Thomas Leslie b.1901 and Lena b.1905.
In 1911, they lived at 38, Alberta Terrace, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham.
Sydney Payne enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 13th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps and landed in France on 30th July 1915 he was killed in action on 28th July 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium
The award of his Military Medal was announced in the 'London Gazette,' 18th July 1917
In memoriam published 28th July in the Nottingham Evening Post:
“PAYNE. – Rifleman Sydney Payne, M.M., K.R.R., passed away July 28th, 1917. – Too dearly loved to be forgotten by mother, father, Leslie, Lena, 16 East-grove, City.”
