Walter Henry Guy (junior) was born on 30th December 1882 at Nottingham, he was baptised along with his brother George and John on 9th December 1888 at St Bartholomews Church, Nottingham, he was the son of Walter Henry 9senior) a joiner and Kate Guy née Slate of 108 Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham,
His father Walter Henry was born in 1855 and his mother Kate Slate was also born in 1855 both were born in Nottingham, they were married in 1877 at Nottingham, they had 7 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 108 Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham, Walter Henry 56 yrs is a joiner, he is living with his wife Kate 56 yrs a green grocer and their children, Kate Beatrice 18 yrs a lace pattern girl and Arthur Edwin 11 yrs of age.
William Henry Guy (junior) married Alice Maud Smith on 16th March 1908 at St Ann's Nottingham, at this time they lived at 40 Pym Street, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the is living with his wife at 34 Hudson Street, Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham, Walter Henry 28 yrs is a joiner, his wife Alice Maud is 25 yrs of age.
Walter Guy served initially with 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters arriving in theatre (France) 4/11/1914. He was either a regular soldier or a reservist.
Guy's Military Medal citation, Gazetted 19/11/1917, reads:
'For gallantry and devotion to duty on the 18th September 1917, when serving in Crete [Trench], in the Plouvain area of Arras, employed in trench repair work, he continued to carry out his duties in spite of the enemy Trench Mortar barrage and was able to ensure that when the trenches were handed over, they were in good repair.'
A grave marker inscribed '1st Batallion Sherwood Foresters 11672 Guy W', in the keeping of Newark and Sherwood Museums Service, records Guy's death in action. No CWGC or UKSWD entries.
