Family history

John William Cheshire was born in 1896 at Mount Sorrell, Leicestershire he was the son of Thomas a labourer and Alice Cheshire nee Thornton and the brother of and Alfred Cheshire, Thomas, Sarah and Emily Cheshire.

His father Thomas was born in 1871 at Swarkstone, Derbyshire, his mother Alice Thornton was born in 1879 at Loughborough, Leicestershire, they were married on 6th July 1895 at Alvaston, Derbyshire.

In the 1911 census the family lived at Babbington Lane, Kimberley Nottinghamshire. his mother Alice Cheshire 32 yrs is a house keeper she is living with her 2 children, John William 15 yrs a coal miner hewer and Alfred 6 yrs of age. The head of thehousehold is Alfred Hartshorn 30 yrs a farm labourer,he is single.

His father Thomas must have divorced his wife Alice as he re married on 11th June 1905 at St Peters Derby, he married Kate Wheatley (born 1871 at Ockbrook,) they had 7 children, in the 1911 census he is living at Ratcliffe Culey, Atherstone, Leicestershire, he is 41 yrs a farm labourer he is living with his new wife Kate 38 yrs and their 5 children.

John William married Jennie Tarr (born 27th November 1896) in 1918 at Nottingham, they lived at 9 Deptford Street, Higbury Vale,

Commencing 18th November 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private John William Cheshire enlisted at Kimberley Nottinghamshire he initially served with the service number 3869 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) he later transferred to the 10th battalion Warwickshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 16th April 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
