Family history

George Thomas Elsom was born in 1888 at Nottingham, he was the son of George Joseph a stationary engineman and Elizabeth Ann Elsom née Bowman and the brother of William Elsom.

His father George Joseph was born in 1864 at Saffron Walden, Essex his mother Elizabeth Ann Bown was born in 1860 at Nottingham, they were married 1888 at Nottingham, they went on to have 4 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 91 Rye Street New Basford Nottingham.George Joseph 47 yrs is a stationary engineman, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and their children, George 22 yrs a cane worker and William 21 yrs a wool turner.

George Thomas married Esther Jones (Born 14th January 1892) they were married on 1st August 1914 at St Leodegarius Church, Old Basford, he was the father of Esther Elsom born 28th June 1915 and Marjorie born 1st May 1917 they lived at 31 David Lane Old Basford Nottingham.

Commencing 21st January 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Private George Thomas Elsom enlisted and served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 30th June 1917 aged 29 yrs, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
