Ernest Riley was born in 1886 at Brinsley he was the son of the late Joseph an engine driver and Fanny Mary Ellen Riley née Nix
.
His Father Joseph was born in 1852 at Greasley, he died in 1887 at Greasley he was 35 yrs old, his mother Fanny Mary Ellen Nix was born in 1864 also at Greasley, they were married on 18th June 1881 at Nottingham,
His mother had remarried by the 1901 Census to a Charles Orrell.
Ernest married Sarah Ruth Leivers (born 4th March 1888 at Greasley) on 26th August 1906 at St Michaels Church Eastwood, they had 4 children, Francis Mayborn 29th June 1906, Joseph born 11th November 1909, Elizabeth born 30th January 1908 and Walter William born 24th May 1916.
He was living in Selston when his daughter Frances May was born in 1907 and by the time of his second child, Joseph's birth, in 1910 was living in Greasley.
In 1911 he was living with his family at 38 Lower Granby Street Ilkeston, Ernest 25 yrs is a coal miner he is living with hs wife Ruth 23 yrs and their children, Frances May 4 yrs and Joseph 1 year old.
Commencing 16th September 1918 hiswidow was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private Ernest Riley enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, He died in Eastwood on 4th March 1918 of influenza and was buried in St James churchyard at Brinsley. Grave Reference : Old Ground Northwest of Church Grave : No. 1.
