Thomas Vero was born in 1899 at Whittington, Derbyshire he was the son of Tom a colliery deputy and Eliza Vero née Atkin of 11 Saunders Row, Hasland Chesterfield.
His father Thomas was born in 1861 at Southwell, his mother Eliza Atkin was born in 1867 at Ilkeston, they were married on 29th November 1886 at Whittington, they had 5 children.
In the 1901 census the family are living at Hasland, Tom 46 yrs is a colliery deputy he is living with his wife Eliza 33 yrs and 4 of their children.
In the 1911 census Tom 12 yrs a scholar is living at 51 Eyre Strret, Hasland he is living with his elder married brother Henry 23 yrs a coal miner and his wife Alice Vero 26 yrs, also living at the address is an older brother Albert 21 yrs a coal miner and younger sister Louie 7 yrs of age.
Private Thomas Vero enlisted on 10th March 1915 at Chesterfield, giving his address as 212 Chatsworth Road, Brampton Chesterfield giving a false age of 19 yrs and 1month (he was born in 1899 so was in fact 16 yrs of age) he was posted to the 3/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 27th October 1915 he died of wounds (gun shot wound to his groin) received on 22nd July 1916 on 23rd July 1916 at No 2 Stationary Hospital at Abberville he is buried at Abberville Communal Cemetry, France
