Ernest Ward was born in 1899 at Lynn Croft, Eastwood, he was the son of Joseph a colliery deputy and Ann Ward née Buxton of 6 Wood Street Eastwood Nottinghamshire
His father Joseph was born in 1863 at Greasley, his mother Ann Buxton was born in 1867 at Ilkeston, they were married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 4 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Walker Street, Eastwood, Joseph 48 yrs is a colliery deputy (Below ground) he is living with his wife Ann 44 yrs and their children, Ethel 22 yrs a housemain domestic servant, Edith 16 yrs no occupation, Ernesst 12 yrs a scholar and Harold 5 yrs of age, also living with the family is Mary Buxton a widow 87 yrs of age mother in law.
Private Ernest Ward enlisted and served with the 10th battalion, Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th October 1918 aged 19 yrs, he is buried at Amerval Communal Cemetery Extension, Solesmes, France
