Family history

Walter Walker was born in 1878 at Morton, he was the son of Richard Edwin Walker of Stonebroom Alfreton and his second wife Eliza Mosley of 402 Edge Row, Stonebroom near Alfreton.

Richard was born in in 1848 at Ashover, Derbyshire, he was married to his first wife Ann Ralph (Born 1850 Sutton in Ashfield she died in 1919 aged 69 yrs) he went onto marry Eliza Mosley (born 1852 at Hallfield Gate, Derbyshire, they were married on 17th July 1871 at Morton Derbyshire, Richard had 14 children.

In the 1911 census Richard was living at 404 Stonebroom, Alfreton, he is shown as a widow 62 yrs and a coal miner he is living with his son Herbert 20 yrs a coal miner and Anne 23 yrs no occupation listed.

Walter was the husband of Annie Elizabeth Wilson (born 21st November 1876,) they were married on 22nd September 1902 at Chesterfield registery office, they went on to have following children, William Edward born 22nd January 1903, Evelyn born 10th November 1904 and Walter Ernest born 3rd October 1906, they lived at 11 Station Street, and later 62 Station Street Sutton in Ashfield.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Station Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Walter Walker 32 yrs is coal miner he is living with his wife Elizabeth 34 yrs and their children, William Edward 8 yrs of age, Evelyn 6 yrs and Walter Ernest 4 years of age.

Commencing 31st January 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Rifleman Walter Walker attested on 2nd December 1914 at Nottingham, giving his address as 11 Station Street, Sutton in Ashfield, he was 36 yrs and 6 months old, he was a coal miner and was married.

He attended the Winchester barracks on 8th December 1914 and was posted to the King's Royal Rifles. He embarked on 12th May 1915 for France and was reported missing in action on 25th May 1915 later confoirmed killed in action on that date. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Extra information

His brother Allwood Walker born 1883 Stonebroom, served with the service number 12573 in the 10th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th October 1918, and is buried at Montigny Communal Cemetery, Nord, France.

He is not recorded on this roll of honour having no connection to Nottinghashire.
