James Steeples was born in 1877 at Swanwick, he was the son of the late Thomas Steeples, a horse keeper ostler and his second wife Hannah Steeples née Clark,
His father Thomas was born in 1829 at Wirksworth he died in 1892 at Belper he was aged 61 yrs, his first wife Harriett Cordin was born in 1823 at Wirksworth, she died in 1862 at Belper she was 39 yrs of age, they were married on 17th November 1846 at Belper, they had 2 children,Henry born 1848 and Emma born 1856.
Following the death of his first wife his father went on to remarry to Hannah Clark born 1843 at Smalley, they were married in 1863 at Belper, they went on to have 6 children.
James never married andwas living at Scarcliffe upon his enlistment his sister Mrs E Waller of Hillstown, Bolsover was his next of kin.
Private James Steeples enlisted at Bolsover whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, landing in France on 29th August 1915, he was killed in action on 12th April 1917 he is buried at Lieven Communal Cemetery extension, France
