Samuel Michael Norton (junior) was born in 1895 at Thurmaston, Leicestershire, he was the son of Samuel Michael Norton (senior) a hosiery frame hand and Mary Ann Norton née Ancott and the brother of Lilian, Gertrude, Beatrice, Ada, Mary and Arthur Job Norton.of 17 George Street Huthwaite Nottinghamshire.
His father Samuel Michael Norton was born in 1866 at Leicester, his mother Mary Ann Ancroft was born in 1867 in Derbyshire, they were martied in 1886 at Leicester, they had 8 children.

In 1911 they lived at 7 Argylle Street Leicester Samuel Michael is 44 yrs and is a hosiery frame hand, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 44 yrs and their children, Lillian 19 yrs a hosiery hand, Gertude 18 yrs a hosiery hand, Samuel 16yrs a confetionary cake maker, Beatrice 12 yrs a scholar, Ada 10 yrs a scholar, Mary Ann 14 yrs a hosiery hand and Austin Job 8 yrs a scholar.

Private Samuel Michael Norton enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Nottingham, initially serving with the service number 37701 in the North Staffordshire Regiment, he served with the 1st battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers when he was killed in action on 3rd October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
