Family history

John Arthur Mee was born in 1895 at Bulwell, he was the son of the late Arthur Mee a coal miner banksman and Hannah Mee née Rhodes of Bulwell.

His father Arthur was born in 1873 at Barlow, Derbyshire, he died in 1906 at Nottingham he was 33 yrs of age, his mother Hannah Rhodes was born in 1873 at Bulwell, they were married on 14th July 1894 at St Johns Church, Bulwell, they went on to have 3 children.

In the 1911 census his widowed mother Hannah 39 yrs a lace mender, she is living with her children John Arthur 16 yrs a hosiery press boy, Mary Ann 14 yrs a curtain press girl and Frank Sylvester 6 yrs of age.

Military history

Rifleman John Arthur Mee enlisted at Woolwich whilst residing at Hucknall, Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 35556 in the Royal Army Service Corps, he was serving with the 9th battalion Rifle Brigade when he was killed in action on 24th March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France
