John William Mays was born on 11th September 1896 at Watnall, he was baptised on 3rd January 1897 at St Marys Church, Greasley, he was the son of William Mays a horseman on a farm, and Hannah Ellen Mays née Smith and the brother of Joseph and Marthat Ellen
His father William was born in 1876 at Hucknall, his mother Hannah Ellen Smith was born in 18777 at Kimberley, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had 3 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Breasting Cottages, Watnall, William Mays 35 yrs a horseman on a farm is living withhis wife Hannah Ellen 34 yrs and their children, John William 14 yrs a day boy on a farm, Joseph 12 yrs a scholar and Martha Ellen 10 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal John William Marshall enlisted at Hucknall Torkard.whilst residing at Eastwood, he served with the 1st battalion East Lancashire Regiment, he initially served with the service number 45258 in the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th October 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
