James Arthur Jones was born on 7th May 1879 at Dudley, Worcestershire, he was the son of the late William Jones a coal miner loader. and the late Caroline Jones née Skidmore
His father William was born in 1842 at Dudley, he died in 1911 in Stafordshire he was 69 yrs old, his mother Caroline Skidmore was born in 1842 also at Dudley she died in 1914 atStaffordshire, she was aged 72 yrs of age, they were married on 3rd November 1862 at Sedgley, Staffordshire, they had 9 children.
James Arthur James married Elizabeth Cooper (born 2nd October 1874 at Dudley) they were married on 11th June 1889 at St Thomas Church Somercotes Derbyshire. They lived at Alma in Selston and had 8 children. Their first son was James Arthur born in 1899 and their first daughter was Caroline born 9th May 1900 however she died in infancy. Their other children were Kate born 1901, Celia born 1904 , Betsy born 1906, Polly born 1908, Elizabeth born 1910 and finally Rachel born 1916.
In the 1911 census the family lived at Alma, Selston, James Arthur Jones 31 yrs is a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 36 yrs and their children, James Arthur 12 yrs a scholar, Kate 10 yrs a scholar, Celia 7 yrs a scholar, Betsy 4 yrs of age, Polly 2 yrs of age and Elizabeth 1 year old.
His army pension record shows that he enlisted on 18th January 1915 at Mansfield giving his age as 34 years and 247 days , his occupation as coal miner and his address as 33 Prospect Road , East Kikrby. He stated he had previously served in the Worcestershire Regiment but he had purchased his own discharge. His next of kin was his wife Elizabeth Jones of Alma, Selston. He served on the home front from 18/01/1915 – 13/11/1915,with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 14/11/1915 – 03/04/1916 and again at home from 04/04/1916 – 13/11/1917. On 13th November 1917 he was discharged from the army having become unfit to serve due to wounds received. He had served in the army for 2 years and 300 days. He was issued with a silver badge no 279829 and was granted a pension.
He died on 19th January 1921 aged 41 yrs, of phthisis (T.B.) he is buried at St Helen's churchyard at Selston
