John William Holmes was born in 1884 at Sutton in Ashfield, he was the son of George Holmes a hosiery frame work knitter and the late Jane Holmes née Clark of Suton in Ashfield.
His father George Holmes was born in in 1855 at Sutton in Ashfield, his mother Jane Clark was born in 1855 at Carlton, Nottinghamshire, she died in 1908 in Nottinghamshire she was 53 yrs of age, they were married on 15th October 1876 at St Stephens Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Fairfield Road, Sutton in Ashfield,George 56 yrs is a widow and a hosiery framework knitter, he is living with his childen, John William 27 yrs single and a builders labourer and Emily 22 yrs a house keeper and Ellen Ann 20 yrs a hosiery garment seamer.
Private John Holmes enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd October 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
