Family history

John Henry Heald was born on 11th January 1897, he was baptised on 14th March 1897 at St Mary’s Church, Chaddesdon, Derbyshire, he was the son of John Heald a cowman on a farm and Sarah Lydia Heald née Knott of The Buildings Sedgebrook Grantham.

His father John was born in 1871 at Balderton, his mother Sarah Lydia Knott was born in 1870 at Spalding, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Newark registration district, they had two further children, Violet born 1895 Chaddesdon and Clarice Mary born 1900 Farndon.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Wood nook, Little Ponton, Grantham, John 40 yrs is a cowman on a farm, he is living with his wife Sarah Lydia 41 yrs and their children, John Henry 14 yrs a farm labourer and Clarice Mary 11 years.

Military history

'B' Coy

Private John Henry Heald enlisted at Melton Mowbray whilst residing at Elton, he served with the B Company 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 2nd January 1915 and is buried at Ration Farm Military Cemetery, La Chapelle D’Armentieres.
